The Horse & Trap in Mt Eden, Auckland hosted the inaugural Baileys' New Zealand Pub Quiz Championship on Sunday September 10. An excellent turnout of 30 teams of 6, representing 13 Auckland venues provided for a very exciting time.
Scoring was very close but the Simultaneous Organisms from the Thirsty Whale in Three Kings held a slim lead for most of the quiz. It wasn't until the final round - 'Entertainment' where things took a most unexpected turn. The Simultaneous Organisms recorded the lowest score of any of the 30 teams - 3 out of 10, and allowed the Die, Di, Die team from the Horse & Trap, the NBLs also from the Horse & Trap, and SPG from Themes Bar in Manukau City to close the gap- resulting in a remarkable 4 way tie for first place.
A ten question tie break then followed, and it was Die, Di Die who emerged victorious by a solitary point from the NBLs, with the Simultaneous Organisms holding 3rd ahead of the SPG team.
Great emotion followed the announcement of the winners - the captain of Die, Di, Die, Richard being the happiest as he was celebrating his birthday and he proudly held the trophy aloft to the applause of the entire bar.
